“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” –Maya Angelou In order to emphasize the importance of reflective writing as an imperative part of learning, we are focusing on writing throughout the month of March by encouraging students and staff at WCMS to participate in the Slice of Life writing challenge. Slice of Life refers to writing a short snippet about an everyday moment in order to hold on to ‘bits’ of life and share their words with a community of writers. So many people already do this everyday through blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and even Instagram. Once students are familiar with its format, they will never be without a topic again. Daily writing will require students to think about and notice stories throughout their day. (I do this when I compose my next 'status update' or 'tweet' about an event in head). They will be writing even when they aren’t writing. Students will also learn what it means to be a member of a writing community. They will learn how to give and receive feedback within a community of writers. A 'slice' is a short story, poem, or letter to our students so that we can illustrate the importance of writing in everyday life? Remember, it can be around 10 sentences or 10 lines of poetry. If you are participating in this challenge, we would love to hyperlink to your blog or website so that our students can read and comment on your daily ramblings. You can leave a link in the comments. Writing can be a very scary thing for anyone, but it is such a central component to learning, we hope you will share your story with us! Here are a few from our district that are participating in the challenge: http://mrshulstinesliceoflife.blogspot.com/ http://wchsellsliceoflife.blogspot.com/ https://twowritingteachers.wordpress.com/2015/02/22/sol15form/ http://slicesfrompod2.blogspot.com/ http://drzornes.blogspot.com/ http://misscollins606.blogspot.com/ https://kristinemblog.wordpress.com/ http://kidblog.org/MsHansensClass-11/
